About the BMW 4 Series

The BMW 4 Series has been in production since 2013, born out of BMW’s decision to split the two-door coupe and convertible body styles away from the 3 Series and give them their own designation. The logic was straightforward: even numbers for sportier coupe and related body styles, odd numbers for core sedan and wagon models. It mirrored a similar move BMW made when the 2 Series was carved out of the 1 Series lineup.

The first-generation F32, produced from 2013 to 2020 (for most markets), launched alongside a convertible (F33) and a five-door liftback Gran Coupe (F36). Engine choices ranged from turbocharged inline-fours to inline-sixes across a broad spread of power outputs, and the range-topping M4 arrived in 2014 powered by the S55 twin-turbocharged inline-six.

Buyers cross-shopping the first-generation 4 Series commonly considered the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe, Audi A5, and Lexus RC.

The second-generation G22 arrived for the 2021 model year, built on BMW’s CLAR architecture shared with the G20 3 Series. It made headlines immediately, and not only for its driving dynamics. The most talked-about design change was an oversized vertical kidney grille that drew inspiration from historic BMW models and divided opinion sharply following its reveal.

The G22 launched as a coupe and convertible (G23), followed by the four-door Gran Coupe (G26). Today’s primary competitors include the Mercedes-Benz CLE, Audi A5, and Lexus RC, as well as performance-oriented variants of compact luxury sedans such as the Genesis G70.

BMW unveiled a Life Cycle Impulse update for the G22 4 Series in early 2024, followed shortly by updates to the Gran Coupe and M4. The refreshed 4 Series brought revised lighting signatures, updated grille detailing, and an updated interior featuring BMW Curved Display with Operating System 8.5 and iDrive QuickSelect.

In many markets, six-cylinder petrol variants feature a 48-volt mild hybrid system with an integrated starter generator providing a modest power assist under acceleration, while four-cylinder models remain turbocharged without a full mild hybrid system in some regions.
