About the Audi SQ8

The Audi SQ8 arrived in U.S. showrooms in spring 2020 as the performance-oriented variant of Audi’s flagship coupe-style SUV. Positioned between the standard Q8 and the track-focused RS Q8, the SQ8 carved out territory for buyers wanting serious power without the extreme edge of the RS model.

It shares Volkswagen Group’s MLB Evo architecture with some impressive stablemates, including the Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayenne, and Bentley Bentayga.

Under the hood sits a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 producing 500 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque. Paired with an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic and quattro all-wheel drive, this powertrain launches the SQ8 from zero to 60 mph in approximately four seconds flat. A mild-hybrid system with a belt-driven starter generator assists efficiency during light-load driving.

Audi waited years before entering the coupe-SUV segment that BMW pioneered with the X6 in 2008. Mercedes-Benz followed with the GLE Coupe in 2015. When Audi finally revealed the Q8 concept at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show, the design signaled a bold new direction under design chief Marc Lichte. Production began in 2018 at Volkswagen’s Bratislava plant.

The 2024 model year brought a significant refresh. Updated styling aligned the SQ8 more closely with its electric Q8 e-tron sibling through a redesigned octagonal grille, new Matrix-design LED headlights with available laser high beams, and digital OLED taillights offering four selectable signatures.

Three fresh exterior colors (Chili Red, Ascari Blue, and Sakhir Gold) joined the palette alongside wheels ranging up to 23 inches.

For 2025, Audi added traffic sign recognition as standard equipment, made the LED interior lighting package standard across trims, and introduced new Carbon and Sport Express Red stitching packages. Competitors today include the BMW X6 M60i, Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe, and Porsche Cayenne S Coupe.
