About the Audi S8
Audi launched the S8 in 1996 as the high-performance flagship of its luxury sedan lineup. Built exclusively at the Neckarsulm plant, the first-generation S8 paired a retuned 4.2-liter V8 producing 340 horsepower with sport-calibrated suspension, upgraded brakes, and the quattro all-wheel-drive system. A 1999 update bumped output to 369 horsepower through the addition of five-valve cylinder heads.
The original S8 gained Hollywood fame in 1998’s Ronin, where director John Frankenheimer showcased the big Audi’s surprising agility through intense chase sequences on the streets of Paris. That film cemented the S8’s reputation as the ultimate Q-car (a sleeper capable of outrunning nearly anything while drawing minimal attention).
The second-generation S8 arrived in 2006 with a dramatic powertrain change. Audi dropped the V8 in favor of a naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10 developed alongside Lamborghini. This exotic engine produced 450 horsepower and could rev to 7,000 rpm, creating a soundtrack worthy of its Italian origins. A six-speed automatic transmitted power to all four wheels.
For 2012, Audi pivoted again with the third-generation S8. A twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 replaced the V10, delivering 520 horsepower with improved efficiency through cylinder deactivation technology. An S8 Plus variant followed in 2016, cranking output to 605 horsepower.
The current fourth-generation S8 debuted for the 2020 model year as part of the redesigned A8 family. Its twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 produces 563 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, assisted by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. For the first time, North American buyers can only get the long-wheelbase S8 L variant.
Standard equipment includes a sport rear differential, rear-wheel steering, and adaptive air suspension. An optional predictive suspension system uses a forward-facing camera to scan the road and prepare for upcoming imperfections.
The S8 competes against the Mercedes-AMG S63, BMW Alpina B7, and Lucid Air Sapphire.
