The Audi S5 arrived alongside its A5 sibling at the March 2007 Geneva Motor Show, giving Audi a proper performance coupe to battle the BMW M3 and Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG. American buyers could purchase one starting with the 2008 model year.

What set the original S5 apart was its naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V8, producing 354 horsepower and delivering an intoxicating exhaust note that turbocharged rivals couldn’t match. Buyers could row their own gears with a six-speed manual or opt for the Tiptronic automatic.

The lineup expanded in 2009 with a soft-top Cabriolet, followed by the five-door Sportback. Interestingly, these variants received a different powerplant, a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 making 333 horsepower paired exclusively with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

When the mid-cycle refresh arrived for 2013, the beloved V8 disappeared entirely. All S5 models then shared the supercharged six-cylinder. Enthusiasts mourned the loss of that atmospheric eight, though the V6 offered quicker acceleration and better fuel economy.

The second generation launched for the 2018 model year on the updated B9 platform, bringing a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 with 349 horsepower (slightly less than the original V8’s output but with improved torque and fuel efficiency).

An eight-speed automatic became standard, and the Sportback body style finally reached North American shores. A 2020 facelift sharpened the styling and updated interior technology. The Infiniti Q60 Red Sport and Lexus RC 350 F Sport provided alternative options during this period.

For 2025, a completely redesigned S5 arrives on Audi’s new Premium Platform Combustion architecture. This third generation replaces both the outgoing S5 and the S4 sedan as part of Audi’s revised naming strategy (odd numbers now signify combustion models while even numbers are reserved for electric vehicles).

The coupe and convertible body styles have been discontinued. Power climbs to 362 horsepower from an updated turbocharged V6, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Current competitors include the BMW M440i Gran Coupe, Mercedes-AMG C43, and Cadillac CT4-V.
