About the Audi S4

The S4 nameplate carries a rich history stretching back to 1991 when Audi first applied it to a performance version of the 100 sedan. That original “Ur-S4” featured a turbocharged 2.2-liter inline five-cylinder engine and laid the groundwork for what would become one of Audi’s most celebrated sport sedan lineages.

When Audi renamed the 100 series to A6 in 1994, the S4 badge briefly became the S6 before returning in 1997 attached to the compact B5-platform A4.

The B5 S4 arrived in the United States for the 2000 model year packing a 2.7-liter twin-turbocharged V6 producing 250 horsepower. It developed a cult following among enthusiasts who discovered its remarkable tuning potential.

For 2003, Audi made a bold move with the B6 generation, installing a naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V8 rated at 344 horsepower (the first time a V8 had been fitted to a compact executive sedan). This engine carried over into the B7 refresh that ran from 2005 to 2008, competing directly against the BMW M3 and Mercedes-Benz C32 AMG.

The 2009 B8 generation marked a return to forced induction, this time with a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 making 333 horsepower. The current B9 S4 debuted for the 2017 model year with a turbocharged version of that same displacement, bumping output to 349 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic and quattro all-wheel drive remain standard throughout.

The 2025 model year marks the end of the road for the S4 name in America. Audi is restructuring its lineup to reserve even-numbered models for electric vehicles, so the A4 and S4 are being replaced by redesigned A5 and S5 sedans. Current competitors include the BMW M340i, Mercedes-AMG C43, Lexus IS 300, and Genesis G70.
