About the Audi S3

The Audi S3 first appeared in 1999 as the performance version of the A3, built on the same platform as the Volkswagen Golf but with significant powertrain and chassis upgrades. The original S3 featured a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine producing up to 222 horsepower and standard quattro all-wheel drive. Although this first generation was sold only in Europe, it established the S3’s reputation for combining hot hatch performance with premium quality and all-weather capability.

The second-generation S3 arrived in 2006 with a more powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged engine producing 265 horsepower. It refined the formula with improved interior quality, sharper styling, and more advanced technology. Like its predecessor, this version was not sold in the U.S., but it set the stage for the S3’s eventual global expansion and competed in Europe against cars like the BMW 135i and Volkswagen Golf R.

The third generation debuted in 2013 and marked the S3’s long-awaited introduction to the U.S. for the 2015 model year, offered exclusively as a sedan. Powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 292 horsepower, it delivered strong acceleration (0-60 mph in about 4.7 seconds) and confident handling thanks to its quattro all-wheel-drive system.

The S3 sedan bridged the gap between the standard A3 and the high-performance RS3, competing against the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45, BMW M235i, and Volkswagen Golf R.

The current fourth-generation S3 (Type 8Y) launched globally in 2020 and reached the U.S. for the 2022 model year. It features a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine producing 306 horsepower, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and quattro all-wheel drive.

The updated model offers sharper styling, improved suspension tuning, and Audi’s latest technology, including the Virtual Cockpit digital display and advanced driver assistance features. Sold exclusively as a sedan in the U.S., the S3 continues to compete against the Mercedes-AMG A35, BMW M235i Gran Coupe, and Volkswagen Golf R.

As of 2025, the Audi S3 remains a standout in the compact luxury performance segment, offering a blend of speed, refinement, and everyday usability that few rivals can match.
