About the Audi RS5

The Audi RS5 debuted at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show as Audi Sport’s high-performance answer to the luxury sports coupe segment. However, American buyers had to wait until the 2013 model year to get their hands on one, arriving stateside with the facelifted version.

That first generation ran through the 2017 model year and featured a screaming 4.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 producing 450 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. The engine, related to the V10 found in the Audi R8, revved to an intoxicating 8,250 rpm redline.

Power went through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic to Audi’s legendary quattro all-wheel-drive system. Both coupe and cabriolet body styles were offered, going head-to-head with the BMW M3 coupe and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG.

After a one-year hiatus, the RS5 returned for 2018 with a dramatically different powertrain. Gone was the high-revving V8, replaced by a twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6 making 444 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque. The new eight-speed automatic proved smoother than its predecessor.

This generation also brought a new body style to American shores (the RS5 Sportback), a five-door fastback offering greater practicality without sacrificing performance. A refresh arrived for 2021 with subtle styling updates and interior technology improvements.

The RS5 continues to battle fierce competition including the BMW M4, Mercedes-AMG C63, Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing, and Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. For 2025, Audi discontinued the two-door coupe entirely, leaving only the Sportback variant available.
