About the Audi A8
The Audi A8 debuted at the 1994 Geneva Motor Show as a technological statement that would define Audi’s aspirations for decades. Developed at a cost of approximately $700 million, the A8 became the first mass-produced vehicle built on an all-aluminum chassis.
This Audi Space Frame construction, co-developed with Alcoa, resulted in a body weighing just 549 pounds (249 kilograms) a remarkable achievement that helped offset the additional weight of standard quattro all-wheel drive.
The first-generation A8 arrived in U.S. showrooms for the 1997 model year, challenging the established Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7 Series with advanced technology and lighter weight. A high-performance S8 variant followed in 1996, and a W12 engine option arrived for 2001.
The second generation launched in late 2002 with bolder styling and a refined aluminum structure. This generation gained fame through appearances in films like The Transporter 2, where Jason Statham piloted an A8 W12 through intense chase sequences. The S8 received a Lamborghini-derived 5.2-liter V10 producing 444 horsepower.
Audi introduced the third-generation A8 in 2009 with full-LED headlights (an industry first) along with improved MMI infotainment and available hybrid powertrains. The aluminum construction continued to make the A8 one of the lightest vehicles in its segment.
The current fourth-generation A8 arrived for the 2018 model year riding on Audi’s MLB Evo platform. A turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology produces 335 horsepower, while the S8 ups the ante with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 delivering 563 horsepower.
The cabin features dual touchscreens and available predictive air suspension that reads the road ahead. A 2022 refresh brought updated styling and additional standard equipment.
Audi plans to continue selling the current A8 through 2027, with an all-electric successor expected afterward. Competitors include the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Cadillac XTS, BMW 7 Series, Lexus LS, and Genesis G90.
