About the Audi A4 Allroad

The allroad name traces back to 1999, when Audi first applied it to a lifted, off-road-capable version of the A6 Avant wagon. That vehicle built a devoted following, and a decade later Audi brought the concept down a size.

The A4 allroad quattro was unveiled at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show and made available in early summer of that year, based on the fourth-generation B8 A4 platform. It differentiated itself from the standard Avant with a wider track, raised ground clearance, quattro permanent all-wheel drive, underbody guards, and roof rails. Early competitors in the elevated wagon space included the Subaru Outback and Volvo XC70.

For the US market, the A4 Avant wagon was discontinued for 2013 and replaced by the A4-based Allroad as a standalone model with a more outdoorsy character.

The B9 generation brought a full redesign, arriving in North America for the 2017 model year. This version introduced a more sculpted exterior, Audi’s Virtual Cockpit digital instrument display as an option, and a more refined interior.

A significant update came for 2020, with revised exterior styling featuring a new grille, softer headlights, and more pronounced wheel arches, along with a new 10.1-inch touchscreen running Audi’s MIB 3 infotainment system. The 2021 model year added a 12-volt mild-hybrid system and increased horsepower across the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine lineup.

The 2025 A4 Allroad slots neatly between a traditional wagon and a crossover SUV, offering a compelling middle ground for buyers who want practicality without the bulk of an SUV. Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 261 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard quattro all-wheel drive.

The ride quality straddles comfort and control well, complemented by a well-assembled interior with leather seating, wood trim, and quality materials throughout. Primary competitors in the current market include the Volvo V60 Cross Country, the Subaru Outback, and the larger Audi A6 Allroad.

The 2025 model year is the last for the A4 Allroad, with no direct replacement planned.
