About the Audi A3

The Audi A3 first appeared in 1996 in Europe as the German automaker’s entry into the premium compact segment, built on the Volkswagen Group platform shared with the Golf. It allowed Audi to attract younger buyers and those seeking an accessible entry point into luxury car ownership. The original A3 was offered only as a three-door hatchback and was not sold in the United States.

The A3 made its U.S. debut with the second generation, which launched globally in 2003 and arrived in America for the 2006 model year as a five-door Sportback. This generation helped establish the A3 as a premium compact alternative to mainstream hatchbacks and entry-level luxury sedans, competing with models like the BMW 1 Series and Volvo C30.

The third generation debuted in 2012 on the MQB platform (shared with the VW Jetta), bringing major improvements in refinement, efficiency, and technology. For the first time, Audi offered the A3 as a sedan, which arrived in the U.S. for the 2015 model year.

This version resonated strongly with American buyers who preferred a traditional trunk design. It featured Audi’s MMI infotainment system, upscale materials, and a range of turbocharged engines. Competitors included the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class, Acura ILX, and Lexus CT 200h.

The current fourth generation (Type 8Y) was introduced globally in 2020 and reached the U.S. for the 2022 model year. It features sharper exterior styling, a fully digital cockpit, and Audi’s latest driver assistance and connectivity technologies. The U.S. lineup includes the A3 40 TFSI and the more powerful S3, with the high-performance RS3 sitting at the top of the range.

As of 2025, the Audi A3 competes against the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan, Acura Integra, and Lexus UX. It continues to deliver on its original mission: premium German engineering, quality materials, and engaging driving dynamics in a compact, approachable package.
