About the Acura TLX

Acura unveiled the TLX in 2014 for the 2015 model year as part of a bold consolidation strategy, combining two existing models (the compact TSX and mid-size TL) into a single, more focused luxury sedan.

This move simplified Acura’s lineup while creating a stronger competitor in the crowded premium sedan market. The TLX positioned itself against established rivals like the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Audi A4.

The first generation (2015-2020) offered two engines: a 2.4-liter four-cylinder producing 206 horsepower and a 3.5-liter V6 generating 290 horsepower. Acura’s Precision All-Wheel Steer system came standard on four-cylinder models, while the V6 could be paired with Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system, setting it apart from many front-wheel-drive competitors.

Throughout its first generation, the TLX competed in an increasingly difficult segment as buyers shifted toward SUVs and crossovers. Rivals included the Infiniti Q50, Lexus IS, and later the Genesis G70, which added pressure to the shrinking sport-sedan market.

Acura completely redesigned the TLX for the 2021 model year, introducing the second generation with sharper styling and stronger performance credentials. The new model features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 272 horsepower, while the range-topping Type S variant uses a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 delivering 355 horsepower.

The second-generation TLX incorporates Acura’s Diamond Pentagon grille and bold body lines, giving it a more aggressive presence. Advanced driver-assistance technologies come standard, while the Type S adds adaptive dampers and a sport-tuned all-wheel-drive system with torque vectoring.

The 2025 model year marks the final TLX, as Acura phases out the sedan to focus more on SUVs and electrification. Despite its discontinuation, the TLX remains notable for blending luxury, technology, and performance at a more accessible price point than many European rivals.
