About the Acura RLX

Acura introduced the RLX for the 2014 model year as the brand’s new flagship sedan, replacing the aging RL model. This full-size luxury vehicle represented Acura’s renewed commitment to competing in the premium sedan segment against established European and domestic rivals.

The RLX rode on an all-new platform designed specifically for luxury applications. Two powertrain configurations were offered. The base model featured a 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 310 horsepower paired with front-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission.

The RLX Sport Hybrid variant combined the same V6 with three electric motors and Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system, generating a total system output of 377 horsepower. The Sport Hybrid used a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Advanced technology played a central role in the RLX’s appeal. Standard features included AcuraWatch safety systems (introduced as standard in later model years), Precision All-Wheel Steer (P-AWS), and adaptive cruise control. The interior featured premium materials and sophisticated infotainment systems. Attention to detail reflected Acura’s luxury aspirations.

Primary competitors included the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, Lexus GS, and Genesis G80. Each offered different approaches to executive luxury transportation, but the RLX distinguished itself through advanced hybrid technology and competitive pricing.

A significant refresh arrived for the 2018 model year, bringing updated styling and enhanced technology features. Exterior changes included revised lighting and Acura’s new “Diamond Pentagon” grille design. Interior improvements focused on user interface enhancements and material upgrades. The changes addressed early market feedback while maintaining the original’s character.

Despite competitive features and advanced technology, the RLX struggled to gain significant market traction. Changing consumer preferences toward SUVs and crossovers complicated the luxury sedan landscape. Production for the US market ended after the 2020 model year as Acura shifted resources toward crossover development.

The RLX represented Acura’s final attempt at a traditional flagship sedan, marking the end of an era for the brand’s luxury car ambitions.
