About the Acura Integra

Acura launched its premium brand in March 1986 with two models: the luxury Legend sedan and the sporty Integra compact. Built on the Honda Civic platform with upgraded suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, and a 113-horsepower DOHC engine, the first-generation Integra targeted buyers considering the Volkswagen GTI while offering more refinement.

Available as both three-door and five-door hatchbacks with distinctive pop-up headlights, the Integra sold nearly 228,000 units through 1989 and earned spots on Car and Driver’s Ten Best list in 1987 and 1988.

The second generation arrived for 1990, dropping pop-up headlights for conventional units while introducing the GS-R variant in 1992 with a 160-horsepower VTEC engine. This era established the Integra’s reputation for exceptional handling and high-revving engines.

The third generation debuted in 1994, bringing even sharper driving dynamics that culminated in the legendary 1997-2001 Integra Type R. With 197 horsepower, lightweight construction, and race-bred suspension, the Type R became widely regarded as one of the greatest front-wheel-drive cars ever built. Competitors during these generations included the Toyota Corolla, Nissan 200SX, Mazda Protegé, and the ever-present VW GTI.

The fourth generation transformed into the Acura RSX for 2002-2006, featuring all-new K-series engines and exclusively coupe bodystyle. The RSX Type-S produced 200 horsepower from its 2.0-liter engine and maintained the Integra’s sporty heritage through its final production year in 2006.

After a 16-year hiatus, Acura revived the Integra nameplate for 2023, replacing the unloved ILX with a five-door liftback based on the eleventh-generation Honda Civic.

The modern Integra launched with a 200-horsepower turbocharged 1.5-liter engine shared with the Civic Si, available with either CVT or six-speed manual transmission. Standard adaptive dampers distinguished it from the Civic Si, while premium interior materials and additional technology justified its positioning against the Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class, and BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe. The Volkswagen GTI and Mazda3 represent closer performance and price comparisons.

For 2024, Acura introduced the Integra Type S, producing 320 horsepower from a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine borrowed from the Honda Civic Type R. Offered exclusively with a six-speed manual, wider fenders, and Brembo brakes, the Type S earned numerous accolades including Car and Driver’s 10Best and Road & Track’s Performance Car of the Year.

A 2026 refresh brought minimal exterior updates but upgraded base models with standard wireless smartphone connectivity and improved technology features, strengthening the Integra’s value proposition in the competitive premium compact segment.
